Tails from the trail
The Coldest Cold, then Snow
January 15th, 2008
The weather this week has definitly thrown a wrench into our training schedule this week. Today's our third day off in a
row. On Sunday we had a scheduled day off, so we didn't run. That night it dropped down to -35F, and Saturday it warmed
up to a bone chilling -22F, for about 2 hours. That's pretty cold. We took the day off, and then this morning we woke
up to a snowstorm. Before it stopped, we had almost 2 feet of snow. And it just started again. The problem with all
the fresh snow is that there aren't any groomed places to run. Breaking trail through two feet of snow for thirty miles
is a lot of work for the dogs. I doubt anybody was out training today, they were probably all out grooming. Tomorrow
we WILL be training, even if we break trail for ten miles we'll be out there.
30 Mile Runs
January 9th, 2008
Today we did our second 30-mile run and it seemed to go well. With Screamer and Modoc up front we got around
there no problem. We're still working out some little kinks here and there, but overall the team is really starting to
come together. I've been keeping an eye on Hudson because she's coming off of the shoulder injury but she's been
looking pretty good. Eugene hurt his left wrist today, but it's not too bad - he'll be out for over a week now. When
we bring him back we'll have to do it slow. He injured his wrist last year doing 30's, but we're hoping that he comes
back from this so that he can race.
